Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La

John Bull’s hexachord fantasia is a miracle of modulation. Its “theme” is an ascending/descending hexachord, played on every chromatic step of the G scale. Especially the Db phrase comes as a big surprise.

I decided to arrange it for recorders ATTB (or ATBB) where the first T switches to Soprano in the end. Transcription (and deciding what instruments, and how to fit the music to them) was a surprising amount of work, but I think the result sounds cool.

Prairie Moon

I’ve long wanted to write a piece for Native American flute and some  backing ensemble. So here is one for a high E flute and AATTBBGG  recorders. Since most people won’t have a high E NAF, this is also quite  playable on soprano recorder with an easy e’-g” range.

Adagio by Saint-George

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George is the earliest known classical composer of African descent. His Adagio (originally in Fmin for piano, here Gmin for recorders) is a rather charming piece and ahead of its Mozartean time.
